The boule de fort is a typical local game, recognized by the Ministry of Culture as a traditional game of Pays de la Loire in the inventory of intangible French cultural heritage. The invention of this sport is traditionally attributed to sailors, who used to play it on the bottom of their boats, which would explain the curved shape of the terrain.
The balls possess a slightly offset gravity center, hence the strong side, relative to the metal strip around them. Like in petanque, the objective is to approach the balls towards a goal called the master by rolling them.
